BBC Radio 2’s Sally Traffic,
alias Sally Boazman, officially opened MetroCentre’s £12
million Public Transport Interchange at the end of October.
Shoppers were given the chance to view a spectacular vintage bus parade
which brought Sally to the Centre from Gateshead Civic Centre.
In addition the Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Pat Ronan travelled in
the convoy of buses dating from the early 1900s as they journeyed to
MetroCentre’s new Public Transport Interchange.
Twelve million pounds has been invested in MetroCentre’s new state
of the art Public Transport Interchange. It is equipped with comfortable
waiting areas where shoppers can alight straight from the bus into the
Interchange without venturing outside. A new MetroCentre bus service
has also been introduced, the MetroCentre Circular, which circles the
Centre and Retail Park every five to ten minutes.
Mike Parker, Director General of Nexus who manage the Interchange on
behalf of MetroCentre, said: "This is a marvellous state of the
art facility which provides a real step change in the travel and waiting
environment for passengers."
