A New Piece of Art!

A new piece of art has been installed in the new Metrocentre Qube. ‘Outside in' by Stephen Newby is the second of three original works created by local artists for the newly developed mall.

Commissioned for Metrocentre in collaboration with Gateshead Council and Arts & Business, the work is made up of a series of stainless steel cubes that are ‘scattered' on the ground floor of Metrocentre Qube, in the yellow mall.

Created by locally based artist Stephen Newby, originally from Ulverston in Cumbria, the highly polished, blown cube shapes are designed to visually interact with the colourful setting of the mall.

Stephen uses his own unique method of "blowing metal" to give the stainless steel shapes a ‘soft' form, using pressure to shape the sides into sinuous curved surfaces.

Each cube is individual due to the nature of the shaping process, which adds to the originality of the artwork.

On seeing his work installed at Metrocentre, Stephen commented: "I feel the cubes work well with their surroundings, the combination of light, colour and movement from the activity in the mall is expressed in the artwork.

I hope the public will interact with the movement and play of light on the curved, reflective surfaces as they move around the cubes."

Over the past twelve months Capital Shopping Centres has invested £45 million in re-modelling the yellow mall to create a new leisure and dining destination at Metrocentre.

The stylish mall has hosts 5 new restaurants, and from December 2009, a new Odeon cinema complete with 3D screen and IMAX theatre, and Namco Funscape with bowling alley and dodgems will complete the new development.

‘Metrocentre Qube' will be home one further new piece of art in September. Each of the three works commissioned has been designed specifically for Metrocentre Qube, and each brings its own unique elements to the mall for shoppers to enjoy.
