This & That Unveiled!

This & That Unveiled!

The first of three major new artwork commissions was unveiled at Metrocentre by the Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor John Eagle. ‘This & That' by Northumberland based artist Colin Rose, is an impressive sculpture made of two stainless steel cones, one suspended from the ceiling and the other rising from the floor.

The work, commissioned for Metrocentre in collaboration with Gateshead Council and Arts & Business, creates a main focus alongside the new restaurant cluster in ‘Metrocentre Qube', the newly refurbished yellow mall development.

The Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor John Eagle unveiled ‘This & That' on the mall, alongside the artist Colin Rose and Barry Turnbull, Metrocentre's General Manager, to an audience of invited members including representatives from Gateshead Council and Metrocentre retailers as well as interested Metrocentre shoppers.

This & That is Colin's first work in a shopping mall and work was developed in response to the specific area and nature of the shopping mall where people would be meeting and chatting. The title of the work came from the idea of a dialogue between two pieces. A conversation, two similar elements side by side, thus ‘This & That'.

The launch was a proud moment for Colin and the culmination of months of work, Colin said: "In making any work it is always my hope that other people delight in the surprise of the object and share my joy of the making, it is fantastic to see the work unveiled and the interest it is already attracting from shoppers here at Metrocentre."

Over the past twelve months Capital Shopping Centres has invested £45 million in re-modelling the yellow mall to create a new leisure and dining destination. ‘Metrocentre Qube', as the area is be known, will be home to two further new pieces of art in coming months. Each of the three works commissioned has been designed specifically for Metrocentre Qube, and each will bring its own unique elements for shoppers to enjoy.
